We are thrilled to announce our winners of 2025 FRDIG. This year’s awards funds innovation or research projects that focus on faculty and residents teaching. Congratulations to our awardees:

• Drs. Quynh Nguyen and Joel Price - Structured Pre-, Intra-, and Post-Operative Teaching Model to Enhance Faculty-Resident Teaching in Cardiac Surgery

R&R Series: Teaching Multiple Learners In The Clinical Setting: Unpeeling The Layers Of Learning

We hosted a great session on teaching multiple learners with perspectives from faculty, learners and patient partners.

This newsletter also highlights our upcoming session on AI - The Role of Generative Artificial Intelligence for Teaching in the Clinical Setting on February 3rd, 2026 as well as other programs, workshops and webinars.

We also introduce new resources on Gender Bias Affecting Women in the Learning Environment, a new Quick Tip for Teaching (QTip) on Common Challenges in Feedback Conversations

R&R Series - What's love got to do with teaching? Embedding humanity into our teaching to spark transformation and joy

A half-day event where we explored the transformative power of teaching with love in health professions education.

February 2025

Supporting Nutrition and Healthy Eating

The Faculty Development Office received a Healthy Workplace Initiative Funding Award and were able to host an amazing event with the talented Chef Paul Natrall, known locally as “Mr. Bannock.” The Office joined Chef Paul for an engaging “Bannock tacos” cooking session focused on Indigenous cuisine. Participants had the opportunity to learn about Chef Paul and his work for the community. It was a fun, informative experience that left everyone inspired to make healthier choices in the kitchen. A big thank you to Chef Paul and all who joined for this wonderful event!

2023 Faculty/ Resident Development Initiatives Grant (FRDIG) - Call for Applications is Now Open!

The Faculty/ Resident Development Initiatives Grant (FRDIG) offered by the Office of Faculty Development supports projects from faculty and residents in the Faculty of Medicine. The focus of the projects must aim to enhance the quality or scholarship of teaching in the Faculty of Medicine within the faculty development priority areas of health professions education that are widely transferrable across contexts.

March 2023

This year’s annual Medical Education Day was held on Friday March 3rd, in-person at the University Golf Club.

The theme for the day was Teaching and Assessing Learners with Disabilities. The 17th William Webber Lecturer was Dr. Lisa Meeks from the University of Michigan Medical School and and her talk was on Creating Inclusive Training Programs for Trainees with Disabilities.

January 2023

Dr. Heather Buckley has been appointed as Associate Dean, Faculty Development in the Faculty of Medicine, effective to November 30, 2027.

Dr. Buckley is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Family Practice and a scholar at the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES). Her history of involvement in the Faculty of Medicine includes 20 years as a teacher and 10 years as a leader on the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) Faculty Development team. Dr. Buckley is the Provincial Portfolio Lead for the Undergraduate Medical Education Program, served as a fellow in CHES’s Clinical Educator Fellowship Program, and is a recipient of the Association of the Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Award for Outstanding Contribution to Faculty Development in Canada.
