Collaborative questioning is a technique you can use to explore a learner’s understanding – in this case when teaching in a layered learning context, in other words with multiple learners at different levels of training at once.

When questioning collaboratively with multiple learners, you:

  • Elicit knowledge levels by asking questions and identifying possible gaps
  • Expand on a learner’s initial thoughts and foster further follow-up questions
  • Encourage learners to explore topics they want to know more about
  • Explore next steps together and deliberately model not knowing
