Introduction to Clinical Teaching and Assessment for New Faculty
Clinical faculty are important teachers and role models for the next generation of health care providers. This page introduces key resources for teachers in the Medical Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs.
Clinical Faculty Teaching Roles
Clinical faculty are the foundation of clinical teaching in both the MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) and Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program.
As a clinical teacher, please review this page for an overview of important information relevant to your role, including a curriculum overview and introduction to key clinical teaching and assessing concepts. You will also find suggestions on where to go for more information if interested.
Curriculum Overview
MDUP Curriculum
The Medical Undergraduate Program (MDUP) curriculum is designed to train medical students towards developing exit competencies within the CanMEDS framework.
PGME Curriculum
Like all Royal College Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) programs, UBC is transitioning to Competency Based Medical Education (CBME). Competence by Design (CBD) is the Royal College’s multi-year, medical education initiative involving the implementation of a CBME approach to education and assessment in residency training and specialty practice in Canada.
This page provides an overview of both the MDUP and PGME curriculums as well as links to resources including what learning experiences learners should have the opportunity to engage in.
Introduction to Clinical Teaching
In the clinical years learners acquire knowledge and skill through direct experience under your supervision.
Clinical Teaching Mini Modules
These four accredited mini-modules illustrate integration of our core values with best teaching practices. They also offer valuable insights and practical tips for teaching.
The four modules cover the interrelated concepts of co-creating goals, doing direct observation and giving feedback, engaging in collaborative questioning to probe clinical reasoning, and reflecting on the experience to offer guidance for self-directed learning.
Each module contains scenarios that address teaching both medical students (MDUP) and residents (PGME).
Accreditation Information: Earn up to 2.0 certified Mainpro+® credits or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Section 1 credits. The total hours (2.0) is for the entire four modules. Each module is 0.5 Section 1 /0.5 CFPC Mainpro+ credit.
