GRANT OVERVIEW 

The Faculty/ Resident Development Initiatives Grant (FRDIG) supports projects that aim to enhance the quality or scholarship of teaching in the Faculty of Medicine. The goal of the FRDIG is to support projects that are aligned with faculty development priority areas in health professions education, and that are widely transferrable across contexts.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

The following applicants are eligible:

  • Persons holding a current faculty (academic or clinical) appointment in the Faculty of Medicine, UBC or one of its collaborating partners 
  • Postgraduate residents with a faculty co-developer or co-investigator
    • Residents must ensure they 1. have a faculty co-developer or co-investigator listed on the application and 2. complete the project by the end of their residency

Projects involving multiple stakeholders across departments and/or sites, and those with broad applicability are preferred.

WHAT IS THE FUNDING STRUCTURE?

Projects are funded from $2500-$5000, with a project lifecycle of up to 2 years (24 months).

Please note:  the administrative management of funding is the responsibility of the grant recipient.

WHAT ARE THE PRIORITY AREAS?

The project should explicitly relate to topics pertinent to faculty/resident development as teachers and enter one of the following streams:

  1. General
  2. Equity, diversity, and inclusion (New stream for 2022 sponsored by the Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (REDI)

General stream:

Projects entered under the General stream focus on supporting faculty or residents as teachers and meet one of the following areas of need or have high merit:

    • Effective questioning/Probing clinical reasoning
    • Faculty and resident wellness
    • Integrating Competency Based Medical Education in residency teaching
    • Other

Equity, diversity, and inclusion stream:

Projects entered under the EDI stream focus on supporting faculty and residents as teachers to incorporate EDI, anti-oppression, and anti-racism principles in the learning environment. E.g., a workshop guide that trains teachers in leading difficult conversations; a pilot of a module that teaches how to use inclusive language in the clinical learning environment; a research study on the effectiveness of teaching methods for creating psychological safety.

Special consideration will be given to projects that address:

    • The experiences of Indigenous Peoples
    • Incorporating faculty/resident development of cultural humility in residency training
    • Managing difficult interactions with patients in the learning environment
    • Raising clinical faculty’s awareness of EDI and anti-racism issues
WHAT TYPE OF PROJECT CAN I SUBMIT?

Both streams accept the following types of projects:

Innovation-focused projects include –

  • One or more resources (such as a teaching tool, evaluation tool, video, module, etc.)

The resource will be accompanied by the following:

    • A guide on how to use the resource if applicable
    • Results from evaluating the resource or workshop
    • A strategy to adapt materials so they can be used as a general faculty development resource once the grant lifecycle is completed

Research-focused projects should aim for a publication or conference presentation and include the following deliverables:

  • A description of how the results advance faculty development related pedagogy
  • An outline of how the research results can be applied to faculty development practice
WHAT PROJECTS ARE EXCLUDED?

The FRDIG does not fund projects that focus on developing curriculum content or improving clinical practice.

ARE THERE ANY BUDGET RESTRICTIONS?
  • No stipends for Principal Investigator and/or Co-investigators
  • A 10% maximum of funds is intended to support travel, attendance at courses or conferences

Full application

LOIs that are deemed as faculty/resident development projects will move onto the full application stage and will be provided with an application form. Please complete all components and submit to fac.dev@ubc.ca by September 11, 2022, 11:59pm.

All applicants will be notified by Sep 30, 2022.

ADJUDICATION

The submissions will be judged on:

  • The degree to which the project aligns with the priorities of the Office of Faculty Development, and Office of REDI
  • The feasibility of the project given the budget and timeline
  • The quality of the evaluation plan or research protocol
  • The degree of impact the project will have – i.e., the degree of transferability and generalizability to other departments and programs
