The Office of Faculty Development Staff

Dr. Kiran Veerapen is the Assistant Dean of Faculty Development, Director of Assessment, and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, UBC. She  completed medical training in Rheumatology in the United Kingdom and practiced as a Rheumatologist in Malaysia from 1986-2004. Prior to her appointment as Regional Faculty Development Director, Dr. Veerapen had been involved with the Island Medical Program for several years as part of the IMP Faculty Development team and as a facilitator for both PBL and DPAS courses. She has a long-standing interest in medical education and in 2008 completed a Masters in Medical Education degree through the University of Dundee, Scotland.  In June 2012, Dr. Veerapen was awarded a PhD from the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program at the University of Victoria.  Her doctoral thesis is entitled “The impact of uniprofessional medical and nursing education on the ability to work collaboratively”. Katherine Wisener is the Associate Director for Office of Faculty Development at UBC. She received her MA degree in the Human Development, Learning and Culture program from UBC’s Faculty of Education and has a background in health education, applied research, and community engagement. Her interests focus on how to best support adult and community learning in a variety of health contexts. Contact: katherine.w@ubc.ca

Erica Amari is the Program Manager for the postgraduate portfolio in the Office of Faculty Development. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of British Columbia, and her Master of Public Health degree from Simon Fraser University with a focus on the paradigms represented by the treatment policies at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital of BC. Erica is also the vice-president of the Craftworks Society board of directors, a non-profit organization that supports people with disabilities through craft therapy. Tiana Carstairs is the interim Program Manager for the postgraduate portfolio in the Office of Faculty Development. She completed her BSc. in Biology and a Minor in Medical Anthropology from the University of British Columbia, and MSc. Control of Infectious Diseases degree from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine with a focus on health system evaluation, strengthening and capacity building. Sharon DoucetSharon Doucet is an Instructional Designer for the Office of Faculty Development. She completed a B.A. in English Literature from the University of British Columbia and is currently pursuing an M.A. in Science and Technology studies at UBC. Tejal SharmaTejal Sharma is the Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Dean for Faculty Development. She completed her Degree in Business Studies and Applied Computing. Jennifer M

Jennifer McKay is the Administrative Assistant for the Office of Faculty Development & the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program Faculty Development Team. She completed her B.A. in Cultural Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Toronto. She has extensive experience in administration, customer service, event-planning, and project management.
